Packing for Ecuador is notoriously difficult. If you start in Quito, you need puffer jackets and thermal layers for the Andes. But the moment your bus descends to the ocean, you are in the tropics. Here is your ultimate Ecuador packing list for the coast.
For the Surf & Beach
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen: The equatorial sun is brutal. Zinc-based sunscreen is a necessity to protect both your skin and the coastal reefs. It is heavily overpriced in Ecuador, so buy it at home.
- Tropical & Warm Water Wax: The water off Mompiche is warm almost year-round. Leave the cold-water wax at home.
- Rash Guard: Essential for long surf sessions to prevent chafing and sunburns on your back.
- A Light Spring Suit: If you are visiting between June and October (the South Swell season), the Gar-a fog can make the water slightly chilly. A 2mm shorty or spring suit is perfect.
For the Jungle Climate
The Esmeraldas province is famously lush. With that beauty comes humidity and completely different packing requirements than the arid coastal areas further south.
- High-Quality Bug Repellent: The mosquitoes at dusk are real. Look for repellents with Picaridin or DEET. (Locally, we also use a citronella and coconut oil mix).
- A Dry Bag: Whether you are taking a boat to Isla Portete or suddenly caught in a tropical downpour, a 10L dry bag is crucial for protecting your phone and camera.
- Lightweight Rain Jacket: Leave the heavy Gore-Tex at home. You need something paper-thin that won't make you sweat in 85% humidity.
For the Digital Nomad
- Surge Protector / Universal Travel Adapter: Ecuador uses the same Type A/B plugs as the US and Canada (120V). However, power surges in rural beach towns happen. A travel-sized surge protector will save your laptop motherboard.
- Power Bank: Essential for long bus rides down the coast where charging ports are broken.
