Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. While most travelers flock to the Galapagos or the Andes, the true hidden gem lies along the Pacific Ocean. An Ecuador coastal itinerary offers everything from vibrant party towns to pristine, undiscovered jungle beaches.
If you have two weeks to explore, you can catch world-class waves, eat incredible fresh ceviche, and experience a genuinely authentic slice of South American backpacker culture. Here is our ultimate 14-day route map.
Days 1-3: Guayaquil to Monta-ita (The Party Starter)
Most coastal journeys begin by flying into Guayaquil. Don't linger too long in the city; catch a bus straight to the coast.
Monta-ita is world-famous. It is the undeniable party capital of the Ecuadorian coast, drawing backpackers from across the globe with its booming electronic music scene, cheap cocktails, and consistent right-hand point break.
- Must Do: Surf the point in the morning, grab empanadas from a street cart, and dance at Lost Beach Club until sunrise.
- Vibe Check: High-octane. You probably won't get much sleep here, but it's a rite of passage for South American backpackers.
Days 4-6: Ayampe (The Chill Detox)
After three days in Monta-ita, you-ll need a detox. Luckily, the sleepy, picturesque village of Ayampe is only a 30-minute bus ride north.
Ayampe is nestled between the ocean and dense, green hills. The roads remain unpaved, the restaurants close early, and the primary activities consist of surfing the fast beach break, practicing yoga, and watching the sunset.
- Must Do: Take a yoga class overlooking the ocean, hike the surrounding trails, and enjoy the drastic change of pace.
- Vibe Check: Zen, quiet, and early-to-bed.
Days 7-9: Puerto L-pez & Machalilla National Park
Continuing north, Puerto L-pez serves as the gateway to Machalilla National Park, Ecuador's only coastal national park.
- Must Do: Take a boat tour to Isla de la Plata (often called the "Poor Man's Galapagos") to see blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. From June to September, this is also one of the best places in the world for humpback whale watching.
- Must Visit: Los Frailes, widely considered mainland Ecuador's most beautiful and pristine white-sand beach.
Days 10-14: Mompiche (The Jungle Sanctuary)
For your final stop, you will head significantly further north to the Esmeraldas province. The landscape here shifts from dry scrubland to lush, humid, tropical rainforest.
Mompiche is a small fishing village that remains delightfully off the heavily-beaten path. It is famous for a mile-long left-hand point break that wraps into the bay, making it a bucket-list destination for surfers.
- Must Do: Surf the left point break. Take a short boat ride to the palm-tree lined paradise of Isla Portete. Walk barefoot through town and eat fresh, cheap seafood.
- Vibe Check: A perfect blend of untamed nature, surf culture, and rustic charm. It-s where the jungle literally meets the sea.
